XCOM Enemy Unknown - Elite Edition App Reviews
I’m really angry. I bought this at full price some time ago. Now it is completely unplayable — crashes every single time I try to start it up. I do get a notice that there’s a “known issue” with Game Center — if they know about it, why don;t they fix it? DO NOT BUY — a compete waste of money, even on sale. For such a high-profile game, you would think that Feral and Apple would insist on making it work. I feel so ripped off right now.
I have a very difficult time getting this app to open on my brand new MacBook Pro. I’ve basically given up on it. Initially, the game is great (once you finally get it to open). After you play it for a while, it looses it’s charm due to almost impossible missions even on easy mode.
READ THE REVIEWS BELOW, This game CRASHES every time for everyone that installs the DLC (Enemy Within). No fix coming as it’s been an issue for 5 years. Just don’t, it’s truly disappointing.
Downloaded the game 4 times and reinstalled it and i keep on getting the same error about engine.ini not being found … Contacted the support 3 days ago, still no word from them.. So if you are a Retina MPB user just pass on this
I loved this game on the XBOX 360, was smooth and fun, on my MBP 17 inch 8gb RAM and over a GB of graphic power it has problems to render this game on "medium" settings. I regret buying this however I can recommend it on a console. Sad. Great game…. if you can live with the horrible frame rate… ok. very disappointed to play it on my MAC.
It crashes!!!
Dosnt even work! Whant my money back!!!
Doesnt start under YOSEMITE
The developer knows about the incompatibility with Yosemite for some time and still does not care. Unbelievable!
With the new update everything is working as it should be. The savegames are not lost, I’m happy. Thanks Feral, keep up the great work and your customer friendly support.
Great game!
Ive been waiting for this to be released for Mac OSX! Its just as I expected… runs great on the Retina MacBook Pro. Thanks for the great port! :)
Big fan of original, now big fan of this one
Very well done. They were able to nail the tricky act of keeping the spirit of the beloved orginal in a game that is entirely its own.
Great
Great just like the title says. Too bad it took forever to download tho since the app store sure isnt Steam...
Who am I kidding? This is the finest game PERIOD. I cannot articulate properly, how magnificent this game is. $50? Made me choke at first. No longer. Never have I been so challenged, entertained and invigorated by a game before. Not only that, i anticipate playing this game over over and over again, even after completing the 40 hours of play. There are so many different ways to play it. I am playing as a stategist now, but next time, i will be economical. Perhaps i will be a tactician next after that. The game is so good looking, especially on my retina display. The controls are SEAMLESS! And I love the use of keyboard shortcuts!!! I am seriously infected with this game. I LOVE my soldiers…when one of them die, its like a funeral in my house. Mark my words….APP OF THE YEAR! I would pay another $50 for an expansion. Buy this game, but only if you want to waste days…and days……..well not waste. Invest into your own enjoyment and satisfaction. What a game!
I specifically bought this game because i love strategy online games vs. a human brain not single player Ai. can someone explain why this game is in the online multiplayer section of the ap store yet does not come online ready??
Awesome Game
I really enjoyed playing this game and the campaign. Thanks Feral :-)
The original XCOM-UFO Defence was one of my all-time favourites of the DOS days (along with Wing Commander and Steel Panthers). So its great to see this remake get so many things right: the destructable terrain, the attachment to your squad as the soldiers gain skills, the base-building mini-game, the UFO interception mini-game, the upgradeable weaponry as you research alien technology, and - most of all - the excellent turn-based tactical combat. But this isnt just a photo-copy; theres a much stronger story element now, with your operational, scientific, and engineering advisors not always agreeing with one another, and a good mystery to solve as you divine the aliens intentions. Moving around the 3D map can be a little finicky at first, but you soon get used to it. One bit of advice: build as many satellites as you can as early as you can; sell all the junk in the Grey Market if you have to - but get those satellites in the sky! And enjoy one of the best games in years.
i can say this is the best game the app store has as of now. if you like rpg games, this is very well dvelopped, great graphics, pretty lame story but interesting gameplay for those of you who played final fantasy tactics; i would say this is the ufo version
Up and down
Incredible gameplay, if you can handle repeated game crashes. I mean REPEATED!
Terrific game, on a computer is the only way to play it. I blame Apple for the constant crashes (on my brand new macbook (Mavericks) with only 4 programs installed). They’ve become a nice looking verson of the PC’s they used to hate.
The is exactly the same great game you’ve played on other platforms, EXCEPT for the game hanging issues, disappearing save games, GUI problems, and abysmal (border-line unusable) multiplayer support. The game will require frequent application restarts due to hanging. Occasionally this will result in LOST!!! save games, which means you will have to RESTART (from scratch) ironman games. I have yet to complete an Classic Ironman game without my save game dissappearing and having to restart completely. Additionally, the “Save and Exit” button doesn’t always work requiring the use of “Force-Quit” just to exit the game. Though Feral touts online multiplayer on the Xcom Appstore website, it does not work out of the box (like it does on another platforms), and requires numerous steps / patching / and setting up of a 3rd party Game Ranger application which makes GameSpy (from the 90’s) look amazing. Only consider buying the OSX port if you have no problem on using “Force Quit” Application on a regular basis, you’re not playing IRONMAN and you have no intention on playing multiplayer. Otherwise just buy it on another system.
The game is really buggy and crashes constantly (every 15 minutes). When it works it’s a lot of fun, but they need to do some serious work stabilizing the code. I’d wait until they announce fixes before buying.
